Kala Azar (Visceral Leishmaniasis)

Leishmaniasis
is the disease caused by the bite of infected female phlebotomine sandfly. It is a parasitic disease where the parasite-Leishmania Donovani resides in macrophages in the body of the patient.

Leishmaniasis is a major health problem in some parts of India and has 100% mortality rate if not treated. According to an earlier report of WHO there are in excess of 12 million people affected by Leishmaniasis and 2 million cases are added every year.

The standard drug treatment of Kala-Azar used to be Antimonials viz. Pentamidine and Sodium Stibogluconate but considerable resistance to the standard drugs compelled doctors to look for alternative drugs. Amphotericin B has been found clinically effective even in resistant cases of Kala-azar. The use of Amphotericin B is however restricted due to its well known life threatening toxicities.

FUNGISOME the Liposomal Amphotericin B has been shown to have proven advantages over conventional Amphotericin B in the treatment of visceral leishmaniasis. Liposomal Amphotericin B has been used extensively throughout the world as the best option for treatment of visceral leishmaniasis even in cases resistant to standard drugs.

Liposomnal Amphotericin B is a safe, well tolerated drug. It is the only USFDA approved drug for leishmaniasis. Therefore, it is the best option.

Taking into consideration of economy of the treatment, numbers of dosage schedule have been clinically evaluated.
